Gove’s BSF Cancellation Challenged by High Court

The Education Secretary Michael Gove has been pushed by a High Court ruling to reconsider a number of school building projects cancelled during the scrapping of the £55 billion Building Schools for the Future scheme (BSF).

The Court ruled that Mr. Gove had failed to properly inform the six councils, who had brought the case against him, that the cuts were being made meaning building works and repairs on many schools were left incomplete. Mr. Justice Holman said that Mr. Gove’s failings were “an abuse of power.”

Mr. Gove has given the local authorities until April 11th to present their cases for the works to him, and that he will approach the appeals with an “open mind.”

The BSF was formally cancelled in July 2010, meaning that funding was withdrawn from more than 700 schools in need of renovation, including many Urban Space clients.
