Sustainability

Sustainability

Urban Space Products are committed to protecting the environment on both a local and global scale. Sustainability and environmental consideration are central to decision making at every level within our organisation.

We believe it is the responsibility of our directors, our employees, our supply chain, our customers and all our stakeholders to make the right choices and take the right steps towards implementing a more sustainable way of living and working…one that respects and protects our planet for now and the future.

As a company we are continually seeking new ways of sustainable working and innovative solutions to minimising our environmental impact in order to help create a better world.

Below are some of the measures Urban Space Products have implemented as part of our commitment to protecting the environment.

Working practice

  • Informing local policy and promoting green initiatives within the regional business community as members of the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce Low Carbon sub-committee
  • Working towards 14001
  • Meeting or improving upon relevant legislation & environmental codes of practice.
  • Developing objectives that target environmental improvements and monitor performance
  • Developing a relationship with suppliers and contractors so that we all recognise our environmental responsibilities.
  • Educating staff so that they carry out their activities in an environmentally responsible manner.
  • Promoting the efficient use of resources, energy and fuel throughout the company’s operations.
  • Promoting waste minimisation by recycling or finding other uses for by-products whenever economically viable (see below)

Materials / Purchasing

We are committed to becoming more sustainable the more we grow, by using our buying power to drive positive change. We are also working closely with WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) WRAP help businesses reap the benefits of reducing waste, develop sustainable products and use resources in an efficient way

  • Members of the Buy Recycled scheme
  • Product design focusing wherever possible on recycled and recyclable materials
  • Launch of new street furniture range made from 100% recycled plastic (plastic bottles that would otherwise become waste) thereby promoting the use of recycled product within the built environment and significantly reducing landfill waste - see innovation section
  • Aluminium, steel and stainless steel from between 70% - 80% recycled sources
  • PET glazing on all shelters is 100% recyclable for re-use on new products

Urban Space Products have helped hundreds of schools, businesses & local authorties across the UK reduce their carbon footprint by implementing a travel plan & encouraging staff or pupils to cycle to work / school (see Sports England / North Wales Fire & Police Case Study). It is only right then that we adopt the same behaviour in our own organisaiton

  • 88% of staff use publc transport for their journeys to work
  • Wherever possible USP management travel to meetings via train site visit team
  • Urban Space Products Cycle2work scheme launched

  • All commercial vehicles regularly maintained, tyre pressure checked and have diesel engines for less harmful emissions
  • We have also reduced the need for travel through smarter IT and more flexible working

Housekeeping

  • All customer invoices / quotes are sent electronically and we ask our suppliers to do the same
  • Printers set to print on both sides of paper
  • Waste paper & printer cartridge recycling
